When the miners in Chile were lifted to freedom, the world got a powerful depiction on TV of just how intricate the rescue mission was. We saw how deep the drill had to plow through the earth to find and rescue the men held captive in the cavern below. We saw how precious any form of communication was to these men and their families above too.
2009 International Science Fair winner Alexander Kendrick is a teen who has developed a device that allows someone to send a transmit from deep underground where cell phone signals are shut out. If you have entered a parking garage to find your call was lost right after taking your automated ticket, you know how that feels. But imagine that you are caving deep underground, injured or lost and had no way to let anyone above know that you needed help.
Not only will Alex’s new texting device help cavers in distress, but it will also help preserve the sensitive eco-systems of caves too by allowing researchers who investigate life in caves to send data without having to actually be in the cave they are investigating.
Alex is just beginning his fabulous work and you will hear his name for sure in the future in the fields of Science and Engineering.
All the best!

Zach Nash: Teen golfer with character

After the tournament wrapped up and he was celebrating at the Rivermoor Country Club, one of the club’s pros spotted something in the golfer’s golf bag which would nullify his win. The rigid rules are clear and this teen golfer (unknowingly) was guilty of breaking a rule which would cost him a two stroke penalty. Since that stroke penalty was not indicated on his score card, the score card was wrong. Signing a score card that is incorrect disqualifies a golfer from contention. more

I love a good viral video. Greyson’s voice quality is terrific and he clearly is destined for some pretty cool things. He is already booked for an appearance on Ellen. Does it get much better? Oh yes, sure, if she leans over into Simon Cowell’s ear on the set of American Idol. The it is straight to the top. more

These students were given an assignment in a class to come up with a way to discover if a patient was anemic without using a test that required electricity. So, like kids at a craft table in an elementary art class, the students got busy with a glue gun, plastic containers and lids to turn a salad spinner into a hand-spun centrifuge. more
Harvard Students Create the Soccket Soccer Ball: Providing Energy for Africans OFF the GRID

Brilliant Kids Changing the world yet again!
Divergent thinkers, creative problem solvers and environmentalists–not to mention Harvard students Jessica Lin, Jessica O. Matthews, Julie Silverman, and Hemali Thakkar offer up an idea that is incredible on multiple accounts.
These young women became aware that shockingly more than ninety percent of the African population lives off the grid. Living with no electricity, many of these people play soccer whenever they get the chance—after all there are no TV’s to watch, computer games to play or the ability to have long cell phone conversations. These brilliant and creative girls had an idea that is truly awesome.
These young minds developed a soccer ball that can actually capture energy from every single kick, dribble, and throw, and stingily stores it for later use. The implications of this is staggering. A child can go play a game of soccer with friends, kick and juggle the ball all the way home AND then upon arriving home home actually charge an LED lamp, cell phone, or battery!
This seriously reduces the use of expensive and unhealthy kerosene lamps and the long walks needed to get to a source to charge cell phones. In the future the founders hope the SOCCKET Ball will not only power single-family homes but also hospitals and schools. The positive outcomes of this invention on individual kids and families is remarkable: Not only will this save people a lot of money–that money will be better used for schooling, clothing and food. Child labor will be significantly reduced and soccer time actually become good for the family and community.
Kudos and a special acknowledgment goes out to Jessica Lin, Jessica O. Matthews, Julia Silverman and Hemali Thakkar, the SOCCKET Ball Team from WRWKT! You are changing the world!
All the best!
