Harvard Students Create the Soccket Soccer Ball: Providing Energy for Africans OFF the GRID

Brilliant Kids Changing the world yet again!
Divergent thinkers, creative problem solvers and environmentalists–not to mention Harvard students Jessica Lin, Jessica O. Matthews, Julie Silverman, and Hemali Thakkar offer up an idea that is incredible on multiple accounts.
These young women became aware that shockingly more than ninety percent of the African population lives off the grid. Living with no electricity, many of these people play soccer whenever they get the chance—after all there are no TV’s to watch, computer games to play or the ability to have long cell phone conversations. These brilliant and creative girls had an idea that is truly awesome.
These young minds developed a soccer ball that can actually capture energy from every single kick, dribble, and throw, and stingily stores it for later use. The implications of this is staggering. A child can go play a game of soccer with friends, kick and juggle the ball all the way home AND then upon arriving home home actually charge an LED lamp, cell phone, or battery!
This seriously reduces the use of expensive and unhealthy kerosene lamps and the long walks needed to get to a source to charge cell phones. In the future the founders hope the SOCCKET Ball will not only power single-family homes but also hospitals and schools. The positive outcomes of this invention on individual kids and families is remarkable: Not only will this save people a lot of money–that money will be better used for schooling, clothing and food. Child labor will be significantly reduced and soccer time actually become good for the family and community.
Kudos and a special acknowledgment goes out to Jessica Lin, Jessica O. Matthews, Julia Silverman and Hemali Thakkar, the SOCCKET Ball Team from WRWKT! You are changing the world!
All the best!

18 Year old Travis Allen's Important Public Service Message
| February 16, 2010 | Posted by admin under CS4seniors.com, Ischool initiative, Rena Reese, Soul Salon International, the soul salon, Travis Allen, whats right with kids today, WRWKT |
When I saw this public service announcement from Travis Allen, I got chills. The sort of chills that the body uses to confirm to the mind and heart that you are seeing, hearing or experiencing a profound truth, something really important or divinely inspired. This message is so important– and it touches the heart even more when you learn that it was created by an 18 year old–not a baby boomer trying to get the grand-kids to call.
Perhaps you recall the name Travis Allen since he was featured on the WRWKT Blog in May of 2009. Well, he is still up to a lot of creative good stuff that is worthy of another feature. This video is worth taking a look at and sharing with your friends. It may mean the difference between connection and isolation for a special senior out there! Don’t get derailed and all “political minded” before you see this posting. This blog is not about politics, it is about kids. This articulate, passionate, independent minded (remember this is not political) teen has a delivery and depth to his message. He is more than a speaker, politician, actor and teen–he is an example of what using your gifts and living your passion looks like in the real world.

Kids Nudge the President to be a part of the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen

Capture the passion of a child and you can solve the world’s problems. Capture the pure intent of a child and you can pierce through the epic agenda’s of big corporations. Capture a child’s love for nature–their planet and the animals that live among us and you can prompt change that is far reaching– and it can sail right up to the top of the chain of command.
To urge the President, children of WWF staffers were invited to tape a personal message to the President asking for his support in leading us in Copenhagen, at the UN Climate Summit. This wonderful video will open your heart, nudge your conscience and renew your faith in all that is Right With Kids Today.

Jonathan E. McCoy: Little Man, Big Message
| September 30, 2009 | Posted by admin under jonathan Mccoy, Rena Reese, Soul Salon International, the soul salon, whats right with kids today, WRWKT |
I just adore kids. They surprise us, inspire us, prompt us to think fresh and with vision. Today’s featured kid is all of these things wrapped up in a dynamic package. Remember this name, Jonathan McCoy; surely you will hear more from him as he grows and contributes even more of his talents and gifts.
The winner of his church’s oratorical award, Jonathan speaks to his church in Baltimore before the governor. His eloquent plea to all people to stop using the n-word is powerful, important and mesmerizing.

The Hue-Man Being Art Project
| July 29, 2009 | Posted by admin under heyugly.com, hue-man being art project, Rena Reese, Soul Salon International, the soul salon, whats right with kids today |
Betty Hoeffner nominated a group of about 50 students ages 9-17 for their participation in an ending racism campaign. This is a terrifically beautiful example as to how engaging kids’talents while teaching an important message does more to etch an idea on their heart than any lecture ever could.

Betty writes…
“The project was developed to teach students – and have them in turn teach adults – the importance of all races living together in harmony. It began with students standing in a circle with their forearms next to each others. They were instructed to embrace the various “hues” of each others skin and discuss all of the things human beings have in common. For example we all have hopes, dreams and ‘feelings that get hurt when we’re bullied.’ We all have eyes, ears, blood, bones and skin that is hued differently. Then each student talks about negative judgments that have been made about them. Then they talk about the negative judgments they’ve made about other and the ones they say to themselves. Each student is given instruction on how to replace negative judgments with positive ones. The circle experience has been called “powerful” by educators, cultural diversity experts and most importantly, the teens and tweens. One student said he never felt so connected to his fellow students, most of whom he had never met before.
Students were asked to draw pictures of people of various hues interacting in harmony. The young artists were instructed to write a short essay about their thoughts on racism. Their feelings create an eloquent thesis … an argument for why it is wrong to negatively judge people because of the “hue” of their skin.
Art experts selected the 50 most representative works of art submitted and those are featured in HUE-KIND, A BOOK TO END RACISM, and an 11-minute documentary directed by award-winning filmmaker, Rick Erwin. The book and documentary are packaged together and is available at heyugly.org.”
As always I am so grateful for those who put remarkabe kids on the WRWKT radar with their nominations. Thank you Betty!

Five Children Do the National Anthem Proud

This group of girls are friends who live in Lubbock, TX. On February 9th these five young ladies stunned the crowd at Texas Tech University’s basketball game. Everyone present was in awe of the talent before them, the sweetness in their voices, the ability to harmonize and perform Our National Anthem flawlessly.
I must say that I have never heard a superior version, let along one performed by children ages 6-8. Turn up the speakers and enjoy.
